One Piece vol.78: Usopp Gallery

10 Jul

I believe this blog is long overdue for an update! Many things have happened since the last post, and still are happening: happy and sad things, encouraging and disheartening things, hopeful and heartbreaking things… But let’s save those for a reflective post in the future. Making a new post after the previous one is something that I’ve been having great difficulty doing, but this is happy news that I do wish to share with both Kosuke and Sakura in their loving memory:

Earlier this year, I decided to muster my courage, take a step forward, and take advantage of one of the opportunities that I now have from living in Japan – submitting to the One Piece Usopp Gallery. I didn’t see my piece in the volume that was released after my submission (volume 77), so I concluded that it is highly competitive and that I’ll give it another try at a later time. Lots of things and busy-ness happened so that I never got around to preparing another submission, and volume 78 was released…

Madam Sharley in OP Volume 78And there was my submission. Words cannot do justice to how psyched I was when I saw this. But I will say this: one step forward! :)

Sakura

Photo from December 30, 2012.

Sakura was such a happy doggy. Right until the end, she looked as if nothing was wrong, despite the fact that she had been fighting a very aggressive cancer. My mum and I are really going to miss her…

We’ll miss you so much baby. You and Kosuke were the best family anyone could ever have.

Good night, Sakura. Rest in peace.

AX 2013 Recap

Anime Expo 2013 table

A big thanks to everyone who visited my table at Anime Expo! I was a little nervous about my table placement being in the far corner, but I ended up making the most I’ve made at an artist’s alley so far – still shy of breaking even if I include every single expense, but awfully close! I offered onsite commissions for the first time too, so that may have helped out too. Speaking of which, thank you so much to the people who commissioned me, or simply showed interest in it but couldn’t due to the next-day-pickup rule. I’ll have to practice sketching characters again so I can work on them more efficiently in the future!

Let me also apologize if I ever appeared grumpy, tired or outright crazy. If you saw me anytime from Day 2 onward, chances are you saw me at my physical and mental worst due to lady pains, so if I was being unpleasant to you, I am SO SORRY! It’s not you, it was 100% me. ;_; Not surprisingly, this trip ended up being my most tearful convention trip to date, but fortunately, they were all happy tears.  Continue reading

Preparing Prints!

30 May

Prints '13

Getting prints ready for the summer convention season! (sorry for the dim light and blur. And I will be trimming the white spaces later) I wasn’t sure if I’d have enough new prints this year but I surprised myself when I counted all the pieces I made in the last year. The problem is if people will like them enough to buy them. /sobs

I also encountered some new issues with printing this time around:

Issue prints

I was expecting some prints to turn out noticeably darker than on screen, but not this dark and contrasty… The brush strokes and textures came out way harsher than I’d anticipated with these… I think the issue is less apparent in the Journey print, but more with the Floating one to the right with the creature’s head (it honestly makes me sad). A part of me feels terrible about the thought of selling it, even though no one is going to know what the original on-screen version looks like. Then again, there are those old, odd prints that I abhor now but people seem to love (though more often than not these are fanart, whereas Floating isn’t).

Unfinished Pieces 2008-2010

25 May

My trip’s jet lag has sucked my energy dry over the last few days, so rather than force myself to work on demanding drawings, I’ve been spending some time writing out story notes and a general timeline for Serenian Century . This is something I actually started a few months back but haven’t been able to work on consistently, so I’m having fun with it right now. But I got stuck yesterday, whereupon I revisited old drawings to feed my brain. They were just the nostalgic nutrition my brain needed, but I also found lots of unfinished pieces, a few that I’d love to finish even after all these years:

Unfinished 08-10

A select few from 2008 to 2010. Sneaked in a couple of RO ones too. Someday!!

Progress GIF: Journey

Progress GIF: Journey

This piece was very spontaneous, something that doesn’t happen much anymore. Nowadays when inspiration hits me out of the blue and I have the time to draw, I’d be in the middle of another time sensitive piece with higher priority, so I’d just let it flow out of my head and into the air without me ever being able to grasp at it. But a few days ago, this wasn’t the case. I was in the middle of another piece, but it was a convention prep fanart and the con isn’t until July, so I wasn’t in a rush. And honestly, I wasn’t feeling too crazy about that piece, so for the first time in many years I decided to draw a digital work on impulse. Just about everything except all the symbols on the cloth were done in one go, in one day – a very rare accomplishment for me in recent years. Unfortunately, I had traveling plans and couldn’t finish it while my creative juices were still fresh, so the symbols (as it turned out, the grind work) had to wait.

Free

I really missed being able to draw loosely and freely without my brain in control. With every piece I’d try to challenge myself and test new methods, and I’d just be hyper-conscious about everything I do to the picture (probably too much to the point that it ultimately hurts my pieces, so I know I need to work on controlling myself there). I intend to keep this up and challenge myself to improve my craft, but I think jumping free right into a drawing without a care for any of my self-imposed rules would be nice once in a while too.

1/10 preview

Journey WIP

A tiny work in progress of a Journey fanart. I have no idea whether this really is exactly 1/10 of the entire picture, and I am too sleepy/lazy to go check. Good night!

Creatures!

24 Apr

I recently realized that I’ve been drawing lots of creatures over the last month or so. I never made a conscious decision to start a creature trend in my art, but when I lined up my recent drawings side by side one day, I just happened to realize that they all featured creatures of some sort. My bro calls me an animal-loving hippie so it’s no surprise that I love creature art and designs, but at the same time, I kinda love… everything… about art and designs… be it creatures or landscapes or characters or items…. I may want to make up my mind and focus on something someday, but for now, I think I’ll stay a sponge and try to absorb what I can. So for now, have some creatures:

Cursed Bokoblins

My most recent piece, Cursed Bokoblins, from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. I made this for the Link’s Blacklist II tribute on GameArt HQ.

Float Preview

A preview of a piece I submitted to a contest. I think this cropped version might look better than the full piece, haha! I’ll post the full piece on dA at a later time.

Symphonic Hue Preview

And then here’s another preview for yet another charity art book, Symphonic Hue. Preorders are currently open here. Be sure to give all of the options a glance, as they have bonus sets with bookmarks, as well as an option to pick up the book at AX. All profits will be donated to Deaf Child Worldwide.

So… that’s a lot in just a month for me, and I’m pretty happy I managed to make so much considering I’m usually such a slowpoke! :D I could probably stretch this creature trend even further back in time to include the Manta Ray and Headless Horseman pieces, and probably many many more (wow… now that I’m writing this all out, maybe creatures/monsters are my calling…), but that’s really stretching it and there were trend-breakers along the way like the Candy House piece and Valentine’s Day Eynord.

Sketches and a drawing video

1 Apr

mina roughs

Character design roughs for a friend.

board roughs

Item design roughs for the same project.

Burning

You know how you see shapes in clouds? I was exhausted yesterday and was gazing into the floor, thoughtlessly trying to make out shapes, and this was the strongest image that stuck to my mind, so I sketched it out.

Apple Monsters

I am genuinely unsure how this came to be…

A full drawing video! Sketching and line-art steps are not included, but it’s still 1hr20min long despite being sped up. The total time spent, according to the recordings, amounts to over 26 hours; some pieces take much longer, while others much faster, so I think this is a good in-between average time for me. It personally felt like a much longer process though because I spread it out across several days, mainly because being conscious that I was recording everything was mentally taxing. I noticed this happening when I tried to record my process with the candy house picture too, and as that piece was under a much tighter time constraint, I stopped recording very early on. I hope to get myself accustomed to recording though so that I could hold livestreams someday, but I don’t think I’ll be making full recordings like this for a long time. But on the plus side, looking at my process objectively like this has been very helpful, for me personally at least; it’s pretty clear when I know what I’m doing and when I’m not, so I can think about how to approach my problem areas differently next time! :)
